Our publishing and financial model

We are not a self-publishing service and we are not a printer. This page explains what we are, who pays for what, which rights you keep and how the agreement works.

The starting point

What we are

Séptimo Cielo Editorial is a publishing imprint with prior selection. Every manuscript goes before the Editorial Committee, which decides whether the work fits our mission, our editorial line and our real publishing capacity. We do not publish everything we receive.

Nor are we a self-publishing platform or a printer. We do not simply typeset and print a file: we accompany the work from the initial assessment through to the launch and the book's life afterwards.

We work with a flexible publishing model: the specific model is decided book by book, after the assessment, and is set out in writing in the publishing proposal before the author takes on any commitment.

Three possible frameworks

Which model applies to your work

The proposal each author receives always states explicitly which of these three frameworks applies.

Traditional publishing

The publisher covers production

The publisher finances the production of the work and takes on the commercial risk. The author makes no financial investment and receives royalties on sales.

Who it is for

Works that, after assessment by the Editorial Committee, the publisher decides to produce at its own expense.

Co-publishing

Shared investment

Publisher and author share the production investment according to a split set out in the contract. Royalties and terms are adjusted to that contribution.

Who it is for

Works with clear potential where the author wants to take an active part in the project and its reach.

Publishing services

The author commissions the work

The author finances production and commissions the services the work needs. The author retains ownership of the edition and decides how it is exploited.

Who it is for

Authors who want to publish to professional standards while keeping full control of the project.

The questions that matter

Who pays for what, and what you keep

Who finances production

It depends on the model that applies to the work. The publishing proposal details, item by item, who covers proofreading, typesetting, cover design, printing, distribution and launch. There are no hidden costs and no services that appear after signing.

What rights the author keeps

The author is and remains the copyright holder of their work. Submitting a manuscript for assessment does not involve any assignment of exploitation, reproduction, transformation or publication rights.

Any assignment or authorisation is formalised through a written contract, clear and accepted by both parties, which sets out which rights are assigned, for which formats, in which territories and for how long.

The moral rights to the work cannot be waived and always remain with the author.

Length of the agreement

The contract states its start date, its duration and the conditions for renewal and termination, as well as what happens to copies and production files when the agreement ends.

Indicative length of contract: [TO BE CONFIRMED].

How royalties work

Where the agreement includes royalties, the contract sets out the percentage, the basis on which it is calculated (recommended retail price or net price received by the publisher), how often royalties are paid and what information the author receives with each statement.

Indicative percentage and payment frequency: [TO BE CONFIRMED].

Print run and printing method

Each proposal states whether the work is produced in a fixed print run, by print-on-demand or a combination of both, and how many author copies are included.

Indicative print run and author copies included: [TO BE CONFIRMED].

The scope

What is included and what is optional

Core production

What every book needs

  • Editorial reading and assessment
  • Copy-editing and proofreading
  • Editing and organisation of content
  • Interior typesetting
  • Cover design
  • ISBN and legal deposit
  • Printing and physical production

The specific scope of each item is detailed in the proposal.

Optional services

What is added if the work calls for it

  • In-depth copy-editing
  • Writing support and editorial mentoring
  • Illustration and photography
  • Ebook conversion
  • Audiobook production
  • Communication, press and book marketing
  • Author website and launch materials
  • Translation and editions in other languages

These are contracted separately and only if the author wants them.

How far the book reaches

Distribution

We work with physical and digital distribution channels, selected according to the characteristics of each work.

Physical channelsDigital channelsBookshopsOnline platforms

The publishing proposal states how far the planned distribution reaches for each book: which channels are activated, in which territories and in which formats. Presence in a channel does not in itself guarantee a volume of sales.

We do not guarantee commercial results, positions in bestseller lists or circulation figures that do not depend exclusively on the publisher. Each project is assessed realistically and decisions are communicated clearly.

Before signing

How all this is put into practice

We do not publish a fixed price list because there is no such thing: a forty-page poetry collection and a three-hundred-page essay neither cost the same nor need the same things. What you can expect is that everything will be in writing before you start paying for anything.

The process is always the same:

Submitting a manuscript does not assign any rights or commit you to anything. Receipt of a work does not imply its acceptance, nor does it automatically create a contractual relationship.

Would you like to know which model suits your work?

Tell us about your project. The Editorial Committee will study it and we will reply with a clear proposal.
